BRUNSWICK, OH- Brunswick sports fans, get ready! Jim Kovi, the Athletic Director (AD) of Brunswick City Schools, has always been passionate about sports and the student-athletes that fuel the district’s athletic programs. Now, in his fourth year in the role, Kovi’s day-to-day responsibilities span a variety of tasks, from overseeing athletic events to managing relationships within the department. But his true focus lies in creating a supportive environment for athletes, coaches, and the entire community.

Kovi explains that for him, every day is different. “Depending on what events we are organizing, I’m in constant communication, coordinating with coaches and support staff, and making sure everything runs smoothly on a day-to-day basis,” he said.

Brunswick is a large district, and managing the extensive network of student-athletes, coaches, and staff can be a daunting task. Kovi credits his success in part to the talented team he’s surrounded by. Each member of the team plays a key role in making the department operate efficiently. “We work with the transportation department, administrators, and a lot of great people. It’s a fluid process that changes daily, and you really have to lean on your team,” Kovi mentioned.

Kovi’s dedication to building a strong team extends to the hiring process as well. He’s brought in new talent to the department, including Athena Fleming (Department Secretary) and Brian Schmidt (Assistant Athletic Director), both of whom share a deep connection to Brunswick athletics. Schmidt’s experience coaching at the collegiate level was another key factor in Kovi’s decision to bring him on as assistant AD. Kovi added, “They’re passionate about Brunswick athletics and care deeply about our student-athletes and our community.”

As the district moves forward into the year, Kovi and his team are ensuring that everything, both on the field and behind the bleachers, is ready through careful preparation. “Each season comes with its own challenges, and there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff that has to get done that the fans don’t see or wouldn’t ever think about,” he shared. From preparing the venues, setting up secure platforms to view and promote the plethora of sporting events, to even something as simple as setting up a stable WiFi connection- Kovi and his team do it all.

Looking ahead, Kovi is excited about the future of Brunswick athletics. On February 18th, the district hired new football coach James Boyeas, a highly visible position that will draw a lot of attention. Kovi is also focused on improving the department’s digital presence by creating more opportunities for families to engage with games and events, even when they can’t attend in person. “We’ve partnered with the BEAT Program to provide live streams of our athletic events for free,” Kovi said. Before, they were using an outside company. Now, they can give other students unique experiences and showcasing Brunswick athletes.

Kovi’s efforts don’t stop there. He’s also working on the design and development of a new high school facility, set to open in the fall of 2027, and overseeing improvements to the district’s website and mobile app. “This role has given me the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with our athletes and coaches,” Kovi shared. “It’s about being present, watching the athletes grow, and helping them become the best versions of themselves. That’s what’s made me love the job.”

As for upcoming events, Brunswick fans have plenty to look forward to. The boys basketball team recently captured a back-to-back GCC title over Euclid on February 17th. Other teams, including wrestling, swimming, and gymnastics, are all performing at a high level as they prepare for their respective postseasons.

Kovi's leadership continues to inspire and build upon Brunswick’s proud athletic tradition. Whether it’s supporting student-athletes, improving facilities, or connecting with the community, he remains committed to making Brunswick sports a source of pride for the entire district. “I work for the community, I work for our coaches, and I work for our student-athletes,” Kovi concluded. “My goal is to give them the best experience possible, and we’re not afraid to try new things to make that happen.”
