By Marlee Perrin, BEAT reporter
MEDINA, OH- Walking into The Honey Bee Bakery (23 Public Square, Medina) is like a warm hug on a cold day. With a wonderful aroma of baked goods including cinnamon, apple, and maple. You are surrounded by all those delicious cakes, cookies, and pies just waiting for you to choose your favorite one. Kimberly McDonald, the owner of The Honey Bee Bakery said that owning her own business is “A gift from God.”
She started her own business in January of 2021 after her former boss approached her with the perfect opportunity for her to take over. Her former boss mentored her until she was prepared to take the company on as her own. McDonald’s interest in baked goods started by following business in the Texas area while baking from home. McDonald’s skill and interest grew as she worked part time at Honey Bee before becoming the owner.
She explained the best part of owning your own business is the freedom for her to make it her own. McDonald’s business has just passed the five-year mark in January 2026. She said that owning your own business can be intimidating at times but inspiring the next. Her advice to potential new business owners is “It’s doable and possible. Some days you will feel like giving up, but never give up.”
